How can I shine if my mirror is smudged

As I drive in to work each morning, I ask the Lord to use my life as a mirror, to reflect His goodness and touch the lives around me.

Yesterday I took Josie to one of my favorite parks in Virginia. In the quiet and solitude, I was able to examine my Christian walk and do some soul searching.

I realized that in spite of my desire to serve God, I have hidden in my heart so many “little” iniquities: a lack of trust in the outcome of a situation; a stubborn determination to hold on to anger; subtle pride, covetousness masquerading as “wants;” a lack of discipline to do the things I know I have to do; a relentless desire to think, love and do things independently from God; and a tendency to idolize God’s creation and not Him.

Then, it dawned on me how dim and dirty my mirror was. So what if my intentions are good. How could Christ shine through me when my mirror is such a poor reflector?

Psalm 139: 23-24 captures the desire of my heart today:

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.

  1. That’s frustrating, isn’t it?

    Where does awareness of defects become an impediment to mirroring God, though? God, after all, doesn’t feel guilty or gloomy.

    Great subject. Thanks!

  2. Micah,

    Thank God for His grace – that He is able to work through us, in spite of us.

    Thanks for your comment!

    Blessings -

  3. You ask “How could Christ shine through me when my mirror is such a poor reflector?”

    Christ’s goodness will shine through you like a lighthouse. I believe that in everything we do, if we do it for Christ people will be able to see that and will Christ in you.

    Stay focused and your mirror will shine through even if it is a little dirty.
